Helleborus \ Lenten Rose

2005 Perennial Plant of the Year –Helleborus x hybridus

Plants produce dark green foliage that is thick and leathery to the touch. Flower stalks are 14” tall and display blooms in late winter, very early spring.  Plants are To represent the Perennial Plant of the Year 2005, we chose a strain developed by Gisela Schmeimann of Cologne, Germany, called the Lady Series.  In general, clump-forming, normally 12-15” tall and 18-24” wide.  Prefers well-drained, rich organic soil in partial shade. Zone 4.

Hemerocallis \ Daylily

Flowers are composed of 3 broad petals and 3 narrow petal-like steeples that overlap for a portion of their length.  Form is variable.  Foliage is strap-like and long with a central vein running the entire length. Likes sunny locations with well-drained soil. Most are rated for Zone 3.

Orange flower, starts flowering early to mid-season and will rebloom.  Goes dormant.Grows to 36".

This Stout Medal winner has a 6" single pale pink bloom with pink self. Semi-evergreen, mid-season bloomer that grows 20" tall. Zone 3.

An evergreen with a delightful melon blend blossom, measuring 6”.  A fragrant daylily growing up to 20” in height.

Evergreen foliage reaches a height of 28".  Flower is purple with a violet band and measures 5" wide.  This tetraploid begins blooming mid-season and is a repeat bloomer.  Plant in full sun or partial shade.  Zones 3-9.

This canary yellow miniature has stayed on the popularity lists for years because of its long blooming season.  It has also been used extensively for breeding other long bloomers.  Dormant.  Early to late bloomer with 2½” wide flowers.  Grows 12-18”.

Apricot-pink petals with strawberry eye and yellow throat.  Ruffled edges on the 4 ½" wide beauty is also trimed in strawberry. Grows to 26". Semi-evergreen, early to midsummer rebloomer.


Heuchera \ Coral Bells

Majority of Heucheras have purple-bronze foliage in maple-shaped leaves.  Dainty bell-shaped blooms that rise on stalks above foliage that fades to bronze by mid-summer.  Heuchera does best in rich, moist, well-drained soil in partial shade.  Zones 3-8.

H. americana 'Velvet Night'

Metallic silver venation on velvety, lobed, heart-shaped leaves. Maybe one of darkest selections with textured dark purple to nearly plum-black 3-5" wide leaves. Mound grows typically 12" tall. Greenish-white bell-shaped flowers extend over mound 18-24" in late spring and early summer.

H. ‘Cappuccino’

A warm espresso with a shot of cream, combines well with gold and yellow in the garden.  The first of the sun-resistant varieties growing 20” in height.

H. ‘Green Spice’

Early summer bloomer with pink flowers. Dark, gray-edged silver leaves have purple veins. Grows 12" tall.

H. micrantha ‘Palace Purple’

Deep purple, ivy-shaped foliage with coloring changing to bronze-green in hot conditions.  Flowers of little consequence.  1991 Perennial Plant of the Year.

H. ‘Plum Pudding’ EU3330 COPF

Breath-taking, 8” glossy burgundy foliage with silvery netting between the veins.  Insignificant flowers.  Grows to 12” tall.

H. sanguinea Bressingham Hybrids

Stems reach 20-24” in height with flowers in shades of pink to deep crimson and white over green foliage.3.

H. villosa ‘Caramel' PP16560

New growth glows with apricot color, fading to amber by summer and intense salmon red by fall. White flowers in late summer. Grows 12-18” X 18-24" wide.


Hippeastrum x johnsonii \ Amaryllis

Trumpet-shaped flowers are scarlet-red with white stripes down the middle of petals.  Flowers rise in clusters of 4-6 on 2’ stems over strap-like foliage in early spring.  Partial shade is best.  Zone 7.


 

Hosta \ Plantain Lily

These shade loving herbaceous perennials are low maintenance and can be used to create different effects in the landscape with their diverse colors, shapes and sizes.  Hostas usually do not grow well in very dense shade, as the shade may prevent flowering and too much sun may bleach the colors on the green and yellow varieties.  They prefer a moist, well-drained humus rich soil.  Zone 3.  As a note, to reach mature sizes listed, Hostas need optimal growing conditions.

H. plantaginea ‘Aphrodite’

This is the double, white flowered, fragrant form of H. plantaginea, a most sought after cultivar that forms large clumps and handsome light green, shiny leaves.  Height 12-24”, width 24”.

H. montana ‘Aureomarginata’

Deep, glossy, forest green leaves have irregular bright yellow-green margins that turn yellow and creamy white. Some graying of the green occurs where the margins overlap, creating an interesting intermediate coloring. Foliage is long and spade-shaped, 12" long 8" wide, with a prominent point. One of the first Hostas to emerge in spring. Pale lavender flowers on 40" scapes. Height 27" by 60" wide.

H. ‘Antioch’

Green-centered leaves with a wide band of pale, yellowish-white margins and lavender flowers. Grows 24x36".

H. ‘Big Daddy’

This highly sought after hosta has large blue-green leaves that are round-cordate in shape and measure 15x10”.  The white bell-shaped flowers are medium sized atop a 36” scape.  Overall size of this fabulous ‘Big Daddy’ is 24” high by 66” in diameter.

H. ‘Blue Angel’

This hosta grabs everyone who sees it!  Very wide and deep blue leaves with white flowers make this a must in any garden.  One of the largest and fastest growing blue-leafed varieties.  Grows to a height of 32"and a width of 70”.

H. ‘Blue Cadet’

Especially suited for edging, this low-growing hosta produces small blue leaves and off-white to lavender blooms.  Height 15”, width 38”.

H. 'Blue Mammoth'

Giant hosta at 34" tall and 65" wide with powdered blue, heavily corrugated leaves. Pale lavender to while flowers in early to mid summer.

H. ‘Bold Ribbons’

Medium showy bold margins of white on light green leaves with striped, bright purple flowers.  Useful as a spreading edger.  Height 10”, width 18”.

H. ‘Brim Cup’

Rich-green, seersucker leaves have wide, irregular, creamy margins turning to pure white. Grows 12" high by 40" wide, with 7½” long and 6½” wide leaves. Scapes are 23" tall with pale lavender flowers. Derived from an Aden seedling crossed with 'Wide Brim'.

H. 'Captain Kirk'

Medium size sport of 'Gold Standard', measuring 20X36" wide. Leaves have dark green, wide margins, gold centers and heavier substance. Lavender flowers on 30" scapes in midsummer.

H. ‘Dark Star’

Narrow, blue leaves are edged in cream. Large, lavender flowers appear in late summer.

H. ‘Diamond Tiara’

Dark green leaves have fairly regular and crisp white margins.  A good, fast growing, hosta for edging.  Grows 18x42”.

H. 'Diana Remembered'

Broad, ovate leaves are puckered with blue-green variegation and have slightly rippled, creamy white margins. Grows 1-2' tall and as wide. White, fragrant flowers in summer on 28" scapes.

H. ‘Elegans’

Grandfather of all large blue hostas.  The corrugated blue leaves are topped with pale lavender flowers.  Overall dimensions are 28” tall and 61” wide.  Makes a large clump that is truly a sight to see.

H. ‘Elvis Lives’

Unique wavy, tapered leaves of ‘blue suede’.  The foliage of this hosta grows to 18” tall and spreads to 36” wide.  It is topped with nice, medium lavender flowers in early summer

H. ‘Emily Dickinson’

Medium green leaves with wide, creamy-white margins form a compact upright mound.  Grows 20x40”.  Fragrant, deep lavender flowers.

H. ‘Fair Maiden’

Fat, heart-shaped leaves have streaky-cream edges with deep green centers.  Lavender flower spikes appear in midsummer.  Reaches heights of about 12”.

H. 'Fire-n-Ice'

Mid-size hosta with leaves of white centers and wide, streaky dark-green margins. Pale lavender flowers. Grows 21X38".

H. ‘Fragrant Bouquet’

1998 American Hosta Growers Hosta of the Year.  Apple green leaves have wide irregular, yellow-white margins.  Very pale lavender, fragrant flowers measure 3” in length on a 30” scape.  Fast growth rate reaching 22” high, 48” wide.  Leaves reach 10” long by 6½” wide

H. ‘Francee’

One of the finest.  Its dark green, medium-sized leaves display clear white borders and lavender flowers.  Grows 24X50” wide.

H. sieboldiana ‘Frances Williams’

Puckered blue-green, round leaves are outstanding features of this background hosta.  Yellow, irregular margins edge the 8” wide by 12” long leaf.  At maturity, forms a spectacular cascading mound with pale lavender flowers.  Grows 32X40”.

H. ‘Fried Bananas’

A sport of H. 'Guacamole' growing 48" wide and 24" tall in an open, semi-upright habit. Medium green leaves have a smooth margin, shiny on top and underneath reaching  8" long and 6" wide. They are moderately folded, of average substance, ovate with a rounded base and 6-8 pairs of prominent veins.  Tubular flowers are 3 ½" long, fragrant and nearly white on 34" scapes.

H. ‘Fried Green Tomatoes’

Large, frosty green leaves darken in color as the season progresses.  Beautiful, white fragrant flowers.  Excellent growth rate reaching 22x48”.

H. ‘Ginko Craig’

This small variety is useful as an edger, or for size contrast when planted among other large varieties.  As it matures it may grow not only more leaves, but also larger leaves.  Height 14”, width 44”.

H. ‘Golden Scepter’

A rapid grower, making an excellent edger.  The orchid colored flowers burst out of this hosta in mid-summer.  Height 16”, width 35”.

H. ‘Grand Tiara’

A sport of ‘Golden Tiara’, the “grand” version has wider and more pronounced bright gold margins with a narrow, dark green center.  Rapid growth rate forms a real nice mound in no time, with purple flowers.  Grows 16x44”.

H. ‘Green Fountain’

This wonderfully unique, large green hosta has cascading, narrow pointed wavy leaves reminiscent of a water fountain.  In late summer it produces lavender, flowers.  Height 22”, width 52”.

H. ‘Guacamole’

Shiny, chartreuse togold centered leaves are 8X 6” wide with a dark green, wide margin.  Very shiny both above and below.  Grows 54X24” tall.  Bloom scapes are 34” tall with near white, fragrant blooms.  Goes great with salsa and chips!

H. 'Guardian Angel'

Blue-green margins surround white and green centers. White flowers. 28 X 55" wide.

 H. ‘Honeybells’

Large, light green leaves arch gracefully downward, setting the stage for fragrant white flowers.  This variety is floriferous and sun-tolerant.  Height 26”, width 50”.

H. ‘Inniswood’

A sport of ‘Sun Glow’ with bright gold, heart-shaped leaves, bordered with a wide, deep green margin.  Lavender flowers on 30” scapes.  Grows 40” wide and 20” tall.  Leaf is 9x6”.

H. ‘Invincible’

Glossy green leaves are very handsome and flowers are very fragrant.  Rapid grower.  One of our best varieties.  Height 20”, width 48”.

H. ‘June’

Grows16” high and 37” wide and is an attractive sport of ‘Halcyon’.  The shaded margin is blue and green on gold leaves.  Bright light will bleach the center to a creamy white.

H. ‘Krossa Regal’

A true standard, this elegant plant has nice upright, frosted blue-green foliage forming a mound 33” high and 71” wide.  Orchid-colored flowers wave on 5’ bloom scapes.

H. 'Little Sunspot'

Heart-shaped, variegated leaves, 3X2", have gold centers and ½" wide green margins. Flowers are white with lavender stripes rising 12-18" in height above the 5X12" wide hosta.

H. ‘Little Wonder’

Dark green leaves with creamy white margins and some streaking toward the mid-rib.  Mid-summer purple flowers.  A low grower at 9” tall and 28” wide. 

H. ‘Metallica’

Medium violet, flared flowers bloom on 36” tall scapes in mid-summer.  Foliage mound grows 33" wide by 16" tall.  Very dark, blue-green leaves have large marginal undulations and grow 7” long by 3” wide.

H. ‘Moon River’

The broad, heart-shape leaves are dark, blue-green with 1/2" white margins that vary in width, and with some streaking toward the midrib.  Foliage mounds display pale violet flowers on 24" scapes. Grows 11x29". Parentage is H. 'Crepe Suzette' X H. 'Blue Moon'.

H. ‘Patriot’

This beautiful sport of H. ‘Francee’ has wide, pure white margins with white streaking toward the center.  Some leaves are cupped.  Slow growing but worth the wait.  Medium violet bloom.  Outstanding!  Height 23”, width 50”.

H. ‘Paul Revere’

Plant grows 16x30". Leaves reaching 7" long by 5 ½" wide, have wide, dark green margins that surround a creamy white center.  Medium-lavender flowers are produced late summer on 2’ shafts.

H. ‘Paul’s Glory’

Forms a 25” tall by 55” wide plant with rugose, cordate, yellow leaves that have a blue-green margin.  Bell-shaped, lavender flowers top off the hosta.

H. ‘Peedee Gold Flash’

Funnel-shaped, purple striped flowers above erect growing plant with yellow leaves and wide green margins measuring 7x3”.  Height 12”, width 28”.

H. ‘Queen Josephine’

Very glossy, dark green, heart-shaped leaves have a wide yellow margin which turns lighter as the season progresses.  Leaves are 6” long and 4” wide with 6 pairs of veins.  Foliage mound grows 17” tall and 42” wide.  Lavender blooms in mid-summer.

H. ‘Regal Splendor’

Distinctive sport of H. 'Krossa Regal'. Leaves are bluish-gray with a margin that is cream-white to creamy-yellow and varies in width. Foliage mound grows 34-36" tall by 36-72" wide. Light lavender flowers on 40-60" scapes. Use in the shade as a background plant.

H. ‘Royal Standard’

One of the finest hostas.  This vigorous, H. plantaginea hybrid has shiny leaves and near-white, fragrant flowers.  A large clump of this late-summer flowering favorite is truly wonderful.  Height 26”, width 63”.

H. ‘Sagae’

An upright grower measuring 36” tall with a 70” spread.  Very large and thick leaves measure 8-12” long and 5-8” wide, with a soft glaucous green and bold cream to yellow margins.  Slug resistant.  Pale lavender flowers bloom on 10” scapes.  Makes a striking focal point among ferns.

H. ‘Shade Fanfare’

This hosta has leaves with chartreuse centers and creamy edges.  It’s a vigorous medium-sized grower, 21x53”.  Pale lavender flowers grow on 24” scapes.

H. ‘So Sweet’

Velvety-green based leaves with neat white margins.  Large, pale lavender, sweetly fragrant flowers in summer.  One of the fastest growing new introductions.  Height 22”, width 50”.

H. ‘Striptease’

Pale violet flowers on 24" scapes bloom mid-summer over this 50" wide, 20" tall hosta. Dark green, cordate, satiny leaves have a chartreuse center and measure 8" long by 6" wide, with 6-7 pairs of veins.

H. ‘Sugar and Cream’

This white-margined sport of H. ‘Honeybells’ is equally vigorous.  Large grower with fragrant white flowers tinged in lavender, atop 30” scapes.  A row of ‘Sugar and Cream’ will make the garden showy and smell great.  Height 26”, width 58”.

H. ‘Sum and Substance’

Considered to be one of the fastest growing hostas to date, this giant chartreuse clump is a knock-out, with 48" tall pale lavender flowers that add to its beauty.  Each leaf can reach 2’ long.  The clumps average 6’ wide in good gardens.  Top of its category list for the past two years.  Height 30”, width 70”.

H. ‘Sun Power’

Erect plant, 28” high by 70” wide.  Leaf measures 12x7½” and is ovate-cordate, wavy and not variegated.  The 43” scape produces lavender flowers.

H. ‘Tea and Crumpets’

A small growing hosta with green, spoon-shaped leaves and white edging makes a nice 18” clump.  Short spikes of dark lavender flowers in the summer.  Shade.  Fertile soil.

H. ‘Temple Bells’

Incredible profusion of bright purple flowers on a dense mound measuring 14” high by 32” wide.  Scapes reach 30” high on this medium to fast grower.  Dark green leaves are 6” long and 3” wide.

H. ‘Torchlight’

Grows to a 2' wide mound and up to 12” tall with circular dark green leaves rimmed in white.  Foliage color is further highlighted by burgundy red petioles.  Blooms in mid-summer with 22" scapes of lavender flowers.

H. ‘Wheaton Blue’

A blue-green sport of ‘Paul’s Glory’, this medium to fast growing hosta grows 26” tall with a 50” spread.  The leaves are medium blue-green with pale lavender flower.


 

Houttuynia cordata ‘Chameleon’

This quick-spreading herbaceous, 9-15” tall groundcover has heart-shaped, multi-colored leaves of gray-green, cream, carmine and gold.  Most any well-drained soil.  Full sun gives best coloration but survives in partial sun.  Zones 3-8.
