H. ‘Lady Baltimore’

Small, drought tolerant hibiscus with striking 2-3” flowers appearing at the branch tips.  Leaves 5-6” wide with 3, 5 or 7 jagged finger-like lobes.  Deep pink funnel-shaped flowers with satiny red centers.  Narrow upright plant 4’ tall.  Blooms mid to late summer.  Plant in full or part sun.  Native to wetland areas but will tolerate drier soil.  Zones 5-9.

Flowers reach 6-10” in diameter and are vibrant red with overlapping ruffled petals.  This seedless hybrid variety was introduced by Robert Darby.  Grows 4-5’ tall.  Zone 4.

Hydrangea

H. arborescens ‘Annabelle’

Creamy-white flowers form large, dense rounded heads.  Bright green leaves are deciduous on an upright 5x5’ growing plant.  Prefers sun or semi-shade and fertile, moist, well-drained soil.  Zone 4.

H. macrophylla ‘Glowing Embers’

One of the best small, summer flowering shrubs with fluorescent pink blooms.  Glossy, dark green foliage provides the perfect background for the pink flowers.  Excellent for foundation and mass plantings.  Grows 3’ tall and as wide.  Part sun to shade.  Zone 6.

H. ‘Mariesii Variegata’

A very outstanding selection with bright green leaves having white to creamy borders.  Flowers are lace-cap type blooms in an enchanting gentian-blue.  Zone 6.

Hypericum beanii \ St. John's Wort

Golden, yellow flowers are 2" in diameter, with 5 petals resembling a rose.  Blooms summer to fall. Foliage is deciduous in northern climates and semi-evergreen in southern.  Shrub typically grows to 3' tall and has light green oblong leaves, 2 ˝" long.  Great plant for mass planting. Average, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade.  Zone 6.

Hypericum calycinum \ Aaron’s Beard

Evergreen shrub with creeping, erect, branching stolons reaching an average height of 2-3’.  Flowers are 2”, bright yellow and star-shaped.  Foliage is deciduous in northern climates and semi-evergreen in southern Average, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade Zone 6.


 

Ilex \ Holly

Evergreen shrubs or trees with leaves ranging from tiny to large, toothed or smooth.  Height also varies up to 50’ tall depending upon species.  In general, hollies prefer rich, slightly acidic, good garden soil in full sun.

Juniperus \ Juniper

You can select a juniper of your choice from groundcovers, shrubs or trees.  Evergreen foliage is needlelike, scalelike or both.  Junipers can succeed in most every well-drained soil type.  They do not like waterlogged soil.  Grown best in full sun, but in hot areas will do well with partial shade.

Lagerstroemia \ Crapemyrtle

Grows as a deciduous tree or shrub.  When trained as a tree, becomes vase shaped with most attractive trunk and branch pattern.  Smooth gray or light brown bark flakes off to reveal smooth inner bark, that becomes even more attractive with maturity.  Plant in full sun.  After established, is drought resistant.  Water infrequently, but deeply.

L. x ‘Lynn’s Everblooming’ (a.k.a. ‘San Jose’)

A fine selection of Lynn Lowrey’s that forms a lightly compact shrub, 4-5’ tall and 4-5’ wide.  Foliage is soft green, with flowers a beautiful lavender blue.  Repeat bloom cycles from April to October.  Blooms more often than L. frutescens variety.  Zone 8.

Deciduous or semi-evergreen bushy, spreading shrub.  Bears oval, dark green leaves.  Fragrant, short tubed creamy white flowers open in winter and early spring.  Height 6’, spread 12’.  Zones 4-8.

A spectacular evergreen shrub with graceful arching branches.  Fast growing with burgundy colored leaves maturing to a deep purple.  Spring brings hot pink blooms that persist through summer.  Can easily grow 6’ tall and 4-5’ wide.  Sun to part shade.  Summer foliage fades to greenish purple.  Zone 7-9.

Evergreen with arching branches of rosy red leaves, aging to dark bronze. Dark rose flowers. 6-8' tall and as wide.  Zone 7.

Flowers are deep pink offering beautiful contrast to the blackish-maroon leaf color that persists in the heat of summer. Leaves are elliptical-ovate and average 1˝-2Ľ" long and up to 1" wide. Growth habit is distinctly upright with strong ascending branches. Grows to 10’ tall. Full sun, part shade.  Zones 7-9.

Many erect, stout, vertical stems, 6-10’ high, creating a 4-5’ wide shrub.  Broad, holly-like blue-green foliage.  Terminal clusters of fragrant yellow blooms in late spring form black, grape-like fruit clusters.  Zone 6.

Leaves are tough, trifoliate, spiny and deep blue-green, with a waxy appearance.  Evergreen shrub growing 6X6'.  Yellow , fragrant flowers appear in early spring and later produce red berries.  Full sun, light shade, well-drained soil.  Zone 7.

On warm, still days your garden will trail of rich, banana oil fragrance.  New leaves have a silky brown pubescence that gracefully matures to a glabrous, dark green leaf, measuring 1˝-4" long.  Yellowish-green, cup-shaped flowers, 1-1˝" are borne in spring with a purple tinge.  Prefers rich, moist, well-drained acidic soil in part shade.  Perfect for understory planting andt holds up in heat and drought.  Grows 6-10' high.  Zone 8.

Leaves are darker than species and have a tighter compact growth habit.
